Addressing Gun Violence Among New York City Youth

Did you know?

According to a 2022 NYC crime report, nearly 40% of gun violence incidents involved youth aged 15-24.

Gun violence is a major issue for youth aged 12-18 in New York City, with over 1,500 shootings reported in 2023, disproportionately impacting communities of color. It leaves lasting emotional scars and increases risks of anxiety, depression, and PTSD. Safe spaces and programs like mentorship, sports, arts, and service can reduce youth crime by up to 30%, providing positive alternatives and opportunities for growth. Addressing this crisis is vital to helping NYC’s youth thrive and envision a future free from violence.

Supporting the Mental Health of New York City Youth Post-Pandemic

Facing Sadness & Hopelessness

1 in 5 NYC teens reports experiencing persistent sadness or hopelessness—but resources remain insufficient for many communities.

Mental health struggles among New York City teens aged 12-18 have surged, with 1 in 5 experiencing issues like anxiety and depression, worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic. Prolonged isolation, academic disruptions, and family stress have left many without support. Programs focusing on mentorship, counseling, and creative outlets are essential to help teens build resilience, manage stress, and recover from the pandemic's impact.

1 in 4 Teenagers in New York City Faces Food Insecurity

The NYC Food Insecurity Crisis

Over 1.1 million New Yorkers, including approximately 1 in 4 teenagers, experience food insecurity.

Food insecurity affects 1 in 4 teenagers in New York City, impacting their health, cognitive development, and emotional well-being. Without reliable access to nutritious meals, many struggle in school and face long-term health risks like obesity and diabetes. Addressing this issue is crucial to help youth reach their full potential.

Addressing Education Gaps

Access To Education

An NYC Department of Education report showed that only 61% of students in low-income neighborhoods met grade-level standards in reading and math last year.

Education gaps, especially in underserved communities, limit access to technology, resources, and support, hindering students' literacy, math, and problem-solving skills. These gaps affect confidence, higher education opportunities, and career prospects. Bridging this divide requires equitable resources to help all students succeed.
