Executive Director's Corner
As we transition from Spring to Summer, it’s important to pause and celebrate all that is happening in and through New Life of NYC. Every day I hear encouraging stories of lives being transformed because of our Team’s hard work and dedication.
I hope you will take a few moments to read these stories and celebrate our New Lifers as they grow into the people who God created them to be. Your continued prayers and generosity enable us to provide quality programming to the teenagers in our City.
You make it possible – Thank You for your support!

Jaylin’s Story
In the journey of life, finding a place where one truly belongs and feels inspired can make all the difference. For many, New Life has become that beacon of hope and transformation.
For one of our New Lifers Jaylin, New Life has been a cornerstone in their spiritual and personal growth. "New Life has helped me in numerous ways," he shared. "They have been instrumental in strengthening my relationship with Jesus Christ and inspiring me to leave behind my old self. I used to be a very violent person, not someone I was proud of. But New Life has shown me a different path."
The impact of New Life extends beyond spiritual growth. It has provided opportunities and experiences that are rare and invaluable. "New Life has introduced me to things that my school never would have," he explained. "The opportunities I've had here are ones I honestly don't think I would have gotten anywhere else."
But perhaps most importantly, New Life has created a sense of belonging and community. "They have become a home away from home," he said, a sentiment that speaks to the heart of what makes New Life so special.
Inspired by the changes in his own life, Jaylin is now committed to helping others find their paths to transformation. "New Life has inspired me not only to change my ways but also to help others change theirs," he said.
And of course, no mention of New Life would be complete without acknowledging the delicious food that brings everyone together. "They always feed me delicious food, especially Andrea's legendary mac and cheese," he added with a smile.
At New Life, transformation is not just a word; it's a lived experience that continues to shape and inspire every member of the community we serve for 50-plus years.
New Life Arts Pillar: Supporting Youth Mental Health Post-Pandemic
In the wake of the pandemic, we've seen a significant uptick in mental health struggles among youth. Our New Life Arts Pillar addresses these challenges through the power of artistic expression. An article by the University of Washington titled "Art for Self-Care and Mental Health" highlights how engaging in artistic activities can benefit mental health.
Key points include:
- Stress Relief: Creating art reduces cortisol levels, alleviating stress.
- Boosts Self-Esteem: Artistic expression fosters a sense of accomplishment and self-worth.
- Healing: Art helps in processing trauma and connecting the mind and body for healing.
- Expressive Therapy: Activities like visual arts, music, and writing support personal growth and reduce depression and anxiety.
To address these issues, New Life engages in various artistic activities. Drawing, painting, music, and writing help reduce stress, boost self-esteem, and facilitate emotional processing. These creative outlets provide a safe space for our New Lifers to express their emotions and foster personal growth, significantly helping to alleviate symptoms of anxiety and depression.
By incorporating art into our programs, we empower youth to use these tools for self-care and healing. We believe in providing resources and opportunities for young people to thrive mentally and emotionally.
Staff Achievements in May: Raising Mental Health Awareness
In May, as part of our commitment to Mental Health Awareness, our team underwent training sessions conducted by the Child Mind Institute, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, and PASE.
These programs provided essential mental health education and resources, helping us support young people and break the stigma surrounding mental health.
