The Story of New Life New York City, Inc. Bo Nixon, gangs, and the redemption of NYC’s youth.
Our Founder
In the 1970s, New York City’s Lower East Side was a battlefield. Education and spiritual growth took a back seat to gangs and violence as the city’s youth were swept up into the chaos. One such youth was Robert “Bo” Nixon. Bo had become a member of a gang, and with time even rose through the ranks to become one of its leaders. However, Bo’s violent trajectory was disrupted when Bill Milliken of Young Life took a genuine interest in him, discipled him, and showed him that God had a better way for him to live.
Our Mission
To help New York City teenagers achieve more than they ever thought they could by developing mind, body, and soul.
Our Vision
That every New Lifer will positively and significantly impact their community, their city, and their world.
Our History
In 1973 Bo was inspired to start New Life of New York City to provide daily discipleship and resources that would transform the lives of youth just like his life had been radically changed. Continuing in its faithfulness to the Lower East Side, New Life of NYC used sports tournaments and a sleep away camp to keep youth off the streets and growing in character and faith. The program eventually grew to serve over 600 youth, and by the 1990s, it had expanded to serving youth in Queens and Brooklyn.
Our Present
Day
Today, New Life of NYC is the premier torch bearer and provider for holistic youth development in New York City. We are passionate about pouring into 12-18 year olds by forming genuine, healthy relationships with no strings attached. We do this by facilitating community, growth, and programs around 5 pillars: Academics, Arts, Athletics, Service, and Spiritual Formation. Over the last 50 years, we have seen the power of Jesus’ followers intentionally seeking the welfare of our youth, and as we seek to expand to all 5 boroughs, we don’t plan on stopping anytime soon!
Get Involved
For over 50 years, we have dedicated ourselves to empowering the youth of New York City. However, we have not undertaken this journey alone. We invite you to join us and make an impact together!
